I believe that respect is something that is earned and not just given. Having been in the military and forced to give respect to people with no more reason then their rank or time in service, I have taught myself to show everyone a term of initial respect. If after my interview they still deserve that respect I’m happy to give it, if I feel they don’t I usually won’t approach them in any fashion. Maybe it’s the Basque in me. In our society today people often demand respect for many reasons, one reason is status or even more ridiculous wealth and I think that it is a complete farce for thoughs people to demand such a powerful personal response to their self being without a self understanding of if they are a person who actually deserves it. My wife suffers from depression, and though it has gotten better in the 12 years I have been with her I still have a deep understanding of the problems of the disease. I truly disagree in the idea that people with low self esteem need respect, I think that the reason for low self esteem is that people with the problem do not believe the are a noble recipient for respect at any level.
